So, a little birdie informed me that earlier this month marked the 17th anniversary of the 90s teen cult classic, Clueless, a movie which highly influenced my 8th grade wardrobe (Contempo Casual, anyone?!) and life. It was one of my favorite movies growing up and remains so today, not only because I still strive to live my life like a "Noxema commercial", all fresh, footloosed and fabulously free, but also because all of those charmingly ignorant dating/love mishaps that took place throughout the movie can actually provide valuable dating and life lessons today. On this Top 10 Tuesday, I pay tribute to one of my favorite flicks by re-conceptualizing those oh, so memorable quotes from Cher, Dionne, Tai, and the crew and making them relevant for today's adult single woman.
Top 10 Dating Lessons From Bronson Alcott High School's Finest
Lesson- Have standards. Not every shoe you try on is going to be the right fit and sometimes your shoes wear out, become unreliable and you have to get rid of them. Same goes for men.
Quote #2: (Upon realizing her crush might be gay) "He does dress better that I do. What would I bring to the relationship??" Lesson- Every girl slips up on her gaydar every once in awhile, don't feel bad. P.S.- Gay husbands are the best.
Quote #3: "College girls wear less makeup on their face and that's why guys like them more." Lesson-When it comes to makeup, less is more. Instead of caking it on, apply it so that your natural beauty shines.
Quote #4: "Suck and blow is a game, Elton!" Lesson- Don't act too cozy around guys you put in the friend zone. They may confuse what you think of as fun and games as an invitation to take things to another level.
Quote #5: "Searching for a boy in high school is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie." Lesson- FYI, the same generally applies to searching for guys in bars.
Quote #6: "This is a bunch of stuff that reminded me of Elton, but I want to burn it, because I am SO over him." Lesson- Don't hold on to items that remind you of your ex. Let go, start fresh, and move forward.
Quote #7: "Would you look at that body language? Legs crossed towards each other. That is an unequivocal sex invite." Lesson- Utilizing and paying attention to body language cues can help gauge and feel out someone's interest in you.
Quote #8: "Christian said he'd call the next day, but in boy time that meant Thursday." Lesson- Attention men, screw the 3 day rule! If you like her, call her sooner rather than later.
Quote #9: Mel:"So, what did you do in school today?" Cher:"Well, I broke in my purple clogs!" Lesson- Ever have one of those unproductive or just bad days at work, where the only thing you feel you accomplished was styling your work outfit to effectively transition to happy hour? Well, it's all about the little things. Even on those days that seem like a wash, you have to take stock of small accomplishments that help keep you motivated from one day to the next.
Quote #10: "I was just totally clueless." Lesson- So yeah, basically we're all clueless when it comes to love and dating. No one has ALL the answers, so we just have to let experiences be our guide. Learn, Laugh, Love, Live...it's the PSG way :)
